Dance Outs:
Our students perform at many different events throughout the year. The busiest time is during
the month of March. In order to participate in a dance out, a dancer must know their steps and
have an acceptable class attendance. A dancer must be at dance class the week of a dance
out in order to participate in that dance out. Being asked to perform and represent the school is
a compliment for a job well done. Dance outs are a great way to build your child’s self esteem
and confidence. Class costumes are required for dance outs. You will be notified by the dance
out committee which dance outs that your child has been asked to participate in.
Expectations:
1. Arrive 45 minutes prior to the show
2. Wig is on or hair is curled
3. Poodle/Bubble socks on for girls, black socks for boys
4. Prepared to run through their steps
5. Bring duct tape if you use hard shoes
6. Bring water bottle
7. Proper behavior is expected – quite and ready to dance
8. Courteous to the people running the event
Feis Information:
What is a feis?
A feis (pronounced fesh) is a competition. The majority of the competition is dancing. There are
also music and art competitions.
What happens at a feis?
The dancers compete in front of a judge. They typically dance 3 at a time doing the same
dance but not the same steps. The steps are exclusive to each teacher. This is called solo
dancing. It is based on level of dance first and then by age of the dancer. The judge judges the
entire group and then the results are posted somewhere at the venue. The winners receive
medals or trophies.
How do I sign up for a feis?
Kathleen will let you know when your child is ready to compete and in what dances they will be
competing in. To obtain a syllabus for a particular feis, go to the North American Feis
Commission website http://www.northamericanfeiscommission.org/. The feis schedule is sorted
by month and then by date. There will be a training class in the month of February to review
how to read a syllabus. The solo dancing fees for your dancer are usually $6.00 per dance.
There is also an entrance fee for anyone other than a dancer of $10.00. Sometimes there is a
flat rate entrance fee regardless of how many people you bring.
